New research suggests that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
